Body Contouring through Liposuction

When diet and exercise are not enough to achieve your body contour goals, liposuction can target and remove specific pockets of fat that are resistant to the effects of a healthy lifestyle. Liposuction is a surgical body contouring procedure that uses suction to remove fat from targeted areas and provide patients with a slimmer, more well-proportioned figure.

If you are struggling to remove lingering pockets of fat from previous weight loss or pregnancy or you just cannot seem to reach your desired fat loss results no matter how healthy a lifestyle you pursue, then talk to us about liposuction. At Jeffrey C. Dawes, MD, Plastic Surgery, we want to help you achieve your dream body.

Is Liposuction Right for Me?

Liposuction focuses on removing fat to contour the body and is not meant to be used as a weight loss tool. The procedure can safely and effectively remove fat from many areas of the body, including the thighs, arms, abdomen, sides, back and neck. Patients interested in liposuction should:

Be within 20 to 25 pounds of their ideal body weight
Have a BMI of around 30 or less
Have mild to moderate amounts of fat they would like to remove
Have tried healthy diet and exercise to remove fat without success
Be prepared to take up to two weeks off from their daily routine for recovery
Have firm, elastic skin and no loose skin in the targeted area
Be in relatively good health and no more than slightly-above-average weight
Be non-smokers to facilitate a healthy recovery
Have realistic fat loss goals and expectations about liposuction

Liposuction and other body contouring methods are not intended to be a replacement for a healthy lifestyle. Liposuction will completely remove fat tissue from the targeted area, but it does not prevent new fat from accumulating through poor diet and a lack of exercise.

How Liposuction Is Performed

Liposuction is performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, depending on the patient’s needs and their preferences. Dr. Dawes will make multiple small incisions in the skin in order to provide access to the targeted fat. A thin metal tube called a cannula is then inserted through the incisions. Dr. Dawes will move the cannula back and forth to loosen the fat, allowing it to be suctioned out through the cannula.

Once Dr. Dawes has removed the appropriate amount of fat, he will stitch the incisions shut and place a compression dressing over the targeted area, if necessary. The procedure varies among patients due to individual fat loss goals and can last one to four hours. Liposuction patients are free to go home the same day as the procedure, although some downtime and recovery will be necessary.

Recovery Expectations

Liposuction provides instant results and you will notice your new contours immediately following your procedure. Final results will develop over the course of three to six months as side effects diminish and the skin gradually tightens. Common side effects of liposuction include soreness, bruising, swelling and numbness in the targeted areas.

Most side effects will fade within two weeks but swelling can linger for a few months and will temporarily affect your figure as you wait for it to gradually subside. In order to help reduce swelling, you may be required to wear a compression garment for several weeks. In the two weeks prior to and following your procedure, avoid taking any blood thinner medication to prevent complications and excessive swelling. Dr. Dawes will provide plenty of post-treatment instructions to facilitate a faster recovery.

After your procedure, you should plan on spending about two weeks recovering and about one week away from work. Each patient’s individualized liposuction treatment will determine the length of their recovery and Dr. Dawes will evaluate your expected downtime during an initial consultation. You should be prepared to take about three to seven days off from work and other regular activities, while taking two weeks off before performing strenuous activities and exercise.
